John Roberts has been singing English folk songs since the early 1960s, when he joined a local folk club in his native Worcestershire. Coming to the USA as a graduate student in 1968, he soon joined with Tony Barrand to form a duo that has lasted ever since. Singing in unaccompanied harmony, or with concertina or banjo, their entertaining style has delighted audiences at major festivals and venues such as Fox Hollow, Mariposa Folk Festival, Philadelphia Folk Festival, Old Songs, and Mystic Sea Music Festival, to name but a few. While continuing to work with Tony, John has continued to work as a solo performer since 1975 with the seasonal performances of Nowell Sing We Clear, though this is his first solo recording. He presents a selection of sea songs, some well known to folk aficionados and others less so. On this recording, his banjo and anglo concertina are augmented with Celtic harp, fiddle, viola, and whistle.
