Revels Music Classes

13J31-5213.jpgStarting in January, Revels will be offering its first of four (4) music classes designed for musicians and aspiring muisicians ages 18 & up.  These entry level music classes will cover the basics of performance-area and music theory topics, so if you have been longing to enhance your musical knowledge or just want to refresh your memory, these classes are for you!

The weekly classes will start January 13 and will be offered every Wednesday at 7:00pm until February 3.

Taught by trained musicians George Emlen and Johnny Nichols, Jr., the following classes will be offered at $12 each:

Language & Diction (Johnny Nichols, Jr.)
   Wednesday, January 13, 7:00-8:15pm

*No Longer Available

Learning to sing and speak in another language can be difficult when you have little concept of the languages’ rules. In this class, you will explore the major diction rules for languages you will see in most of Revels’ repertoire: Latin (ecclesiactical or liturgical), Italian, Spanish, German, & French. Some instructions on how to write and read IPA  (International Phonetic Alphabet) will be taught as well.

Sight Singing (George Emlen)
   Wednesday, January 20, 7:00-8:15pm

*No Longer Available

This course is for singers who sing "by ear" and would like to be better music readers. We will take a step-by-step approach to recognizing and reproducing melodic intervals and rhythmic patterns. George will demonstrate with his voice as well as with the piano and will leave space for attendees to copy him (although he will not hear them!).

Music Theory (George Emlen)
   Wednesday, January 27, 7:00-8:15pm

This mini-course in music theory will begin with melodic intervals and move to chords and then to harmonic motion (chord progressions). George will ask attendees to sing (or even play, if they can be seated at keyboards) for a more complete and kinetic understanding of these basic musical building blocks.

Vocal Pedagogy (Johnny Nichols, Jr.)
    Wednesday, February 3, 7:00-8:15pm

Your voice is an instrument, and just like any instrument, knowing how to properly use it and take care of it is important. This class will give you a quick guide to some of the basics of using your voice in its most efficient way while creating some of the best sounds your body can make. Johnny will guide you through the vocal anatomy and provide tips to keep your voice happy and healthy.
