Voices from the Mountain – NEW!

Voices from the Mountain

In this original musical theatre production by Chris Jorie and Patrick Swanson, the ensemble explores the life and work of one of America’s first “songcatchers.” A songcatcher travels in remote areas, collecting songs from people who have been cut off from modern influences.

Born in Medford, Massachusetts in 1882, Olive Dame Campbell graduated from Tufts University before visiting Appalachia with her husband in 1907. Struck by the soulful singing of an English ballad by a young girl, she set out to collect the music of the people she met there.

The music had come over with early immigrants from English, Scotland and Ireland. Published by Campbell and Cecil Sharp in 1919, the songs were the inspiration for the American folk song revival of the 1960’s and continue to be sung around campfires across America today. Revels Rep will explore these ancient ballads, folk songs, fiddle and banjo tunes, and play party games. Great family entertainment!
