The Christmas Revels
Directed by Patrick Swanson
George Emlen, Music Director
This winter Revels celebrates its 40th anniversary with a return to our original setting, Haddon Hall, the English medieval manor in Derbyshire pictured on both The Christmas Revels Songbook and our original 1978 recording, The Christmas Revels. In this year’s production, the great hall is the star of the show.
In the real historical world in the 1920's the old manor house had been abandoned for 200 years and was threatened with demolition. Our story begins with a last visit to the neglected family seat by the 10th Duke of Rutland and his family and moves quickly onto another plane when they discover that they are interrupting ghostly preparations by the previous owners of Haddon Hall for their annual celebration of the winter solstice.
On a stage teeming with singers, fools, giants, dragons, medieval knights, Renaissance dancers and Victorian masquers, the Duke and his family are given a lesson in the values and pleasures of traditional celebration. Filled with carols and rounds for all to sing, poetry, dances and period music, this will truly be a Christmas Revels for the ages. Join us for this festive and joyous Revels birthday party in the finest English tradition!
Mark your calendars! Tickets go on sale to the general public on October 20th through this website and the Harvard Box Office. (Advance sales to Members begins September 15th).
