SPRING REVELS 1999
Emerson Majestic
Theatre, Boston April 30 - May 2, 1999.
The 1999 Sea Revels
featured a cast of 70 performers in a lively musical celebration
of the sea. At the end of a long, hard voyage that included Africa
and the Georgia Sea Islands, weary sailors disembarked at Boston
Harbor and were joyously reunited with their families and friends.
They told tales of their travels and sang songs of the sea. The
extraordinary cast featured singers David Coffin and Janice Allen,
actor Richard McElvain, British folk singer David Jones and Velocirapper,
a group of local teenagers that brought down the house with a
muscular, swaggering sword dance.
The Boston Globe
wrote:
"The first act, set mainly on the early 19th-century waterfront,
is chiefly high spirited and rambunctious.... The second act was
as lovely as anything Revels has produced. One moving highlight
followed another, with the pace so fluid that the entire show
began to feel like one long, beautiful ballad."
